HAITI | SISTER CLARA'S CLINIC

When our Haitian manufacturer built the medical center for Sister Clara, he did not know what an impact it would have on the local community in Port-au-Prince. Sister Clara runs the clinic with the efficiency of a staff sergeant and squeezes every dollar. The clinic is free for those who cannot pay and accepts whatever donations from those that can. There are dental services as well as medical, and Wednesday is a special day for children. Kalalou is proud to help out with the clinic by donating all the proceeds from the sale of Sister Clara's cross to the clinic. We send the proceeds directly to Sister Clara, not through a government agency or any charitable organization. Every penny goes to her. It is because of the contributed support of our customers that this project is a success. Sister Clara told us that the money buys medical supplies and helps pay for two doctors. What a good feeling, and thanks to all our loyal customers.
UPDATE March 4, 2010
Hi everybody. As most of you know, Haiti was hit by a devastating 7.0 earthquake January 12, 2010. Susan and I have been doing business in Haiti for over 23 years and have developed many friends there that we consider our extended family. We both felt a bit helpless not being able to do more for our friends in Haiti. So after much consideration, we came up with a care package that was handed directly to the people that need it most. Having travelled to Haiti for over two decades, we recognized what is considered necessities in helping start up a new household. This care package consists of the following items that were packed in a box small enough so each recipient can handle it easily.

Five Gallon Plastic Bucket
Pack of 6 Cotton Towels
Cotton Fleece Blanket
Metal Cook Pot
Blue Foam Sleeping Pad
Pack of 5 Cotton t-shirts
Pack of 10 Bars of Ivory Soap
3.5 lb. Can Powdered Milk
Case of 12 Packs of Tuna
Plastic Bowl
Set/2 Flashlights With Batteries
Large Box Saltine Crackers
40 oz. Jar of Peanut Butter
2 Pack Storage Containers
4 Pack Metal Forks
4 Pack Metal Spoons
4 Pack Metal Knives
6 Pack Emergency Candles
Bag of 50 Tea Light Candles
Roll of Duct Tape
3 Packs of Stick Matches
Pocket Knife
8’x10' All Purpose Tarp
70’ Roll of Plastic Multi Use Clothes Line
Pack of 4 Tooth Brushes
Large Tube of Toothpaste
Bag of Blow Pops Candy
Box of 64 Crayons
Coloring Book
Pack of 2 Plastic Drinking Cups
Baseball Cap
Extra Cotton T-shirt
Rubber Shoes
Triple Antibiotic Ointment
Bandages
We sent these care packages along with medical supplies and other necessities in a 40' container to Port-au-Prince. All of the goods were distributed to those in need by Victor Boulos, our good friend and colleague of 23 years. Victor and his family were involved day and night after the earthquake, transporting doctors and aid back and forth from the airport and housing over 30 doctors in their home. His daughters served as nurses in the makeshift hospitals, helping with surgeries and coordinating medical supplies.
